WHY CONSERVE WATER?

You may take water for granted. Water covers 70% of our planet so you may think that there’s plenty of water. Only a small fraction of that is freshwater – what we drink, bathe in, and water the crops with. A recent study shows that we are using our freshwater supply much faster than it is being replenished. A full two-thirds of the world’s freshwater supply is not readily available to use.

Water is a precious resource. For at least one month of the year, two out of three people worldwide find water scarce. Water scarcity affects every continent and most of the world’s megacities – from Beijing to Istanbul, Cairo to Cape Town, Delhi to Rio de Janeiro and from London to Los Angeles, Moscow to Mexico City through to New York, Sao Paolo, Paris and Tokyo.

BILLIONS LACK WATER

hangers

Clean freshwater is essential to human life. Recently, the United Nations shared some startling news: It will not achieve its goal of bringing clean water and sanitation to all by 2030. Billions of people still lack safe water, sanitation and handwashing facilities.

There are a few explanations. Fresh water isn’t readily available where it’s needed most; governments need to build water infrastructure, and funding is grossly inadequate or next to non-existent. Weather patterns are unpredictable; there’s either too much rain or too little – floods or drought, feast or famine. And water pollution is getting worse, which means that the need to upgrade sewage treatment facilities or open new ones is enormous.

Climate change, population growth and economic development also place increasingly higher demands on our planet’s water resources to meet our needs.

BE A POSITIVE FORCE IN THE WORLD

Become a better environmental steward by using water sparingly. Every little bit counts. Consider wearing your clothing more often and washing it less. That’s the philosophy behind Polygiene Stays Fresh Technology – Wear More. Wash Less©.

With Polygiene, clothing stays fresh and odor free longer and therefore can be worn several times before washing. A typical family of four generates nearly 400 loads of laundry each year. Doing one less load each week, at 28 minutes per load saves more than 2000 gallons of water. Plus it frees up three days a year where you can devote to doing something that you love – instead of doing laundry.

By protecting precious water resources, you make your community a safer, healthier and happier place to live.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO SAVE WATER

Making these water-saving practices part of your daily routine can go a long way to water losses should be minimized and water use efficiency increased substantially.

Here are some common-sense actions you can take to conserve water.

1. Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth or soap your hands.
2. Take a shorter shower (and don’t take a bath).
3. Avoid buying water in single-use plastic bottles; keep a bottle of water in your refrigerator so you don’t waste water waiting for it to turn cold.
4. Harvest rainwater to water your lawn.
5. Wash your car at the car wash where water is recycled.
6. Repair any leaks and/or taps that drip.
7. Install water-efficient faucets, showerheads, toilets and appliances.
8. Rinse vegetables and fruits in a stopped sink, not under running water.
9. Run your dishwasher at full load.
10. Run your washing machine at full load – and wash only when needed.

The upside: using less water means saving energy, money and time. The downside? There is none, but it means that we all must become more environmentally conscious.
