A new report warns of a looming crisis of antimicrobial resistant superbugs such as MRSA unless more money is pumped into global drug research.
A review set up by Prime Minister David Cameron reports that drug-resistant infections will kill an extra 10 million people a year by 2050 – more than currently die from cancer. They are currently responsible for around 700,000 deaths each year.
The reduction in population and the impact on ill-health would reduce world economic output by between 2% and 3.5%. Drug resistant E. coli, malaria and tuberculosis (TB) will have the biggest impact. In Europe and the United States where antimicrobial resistance causes at least 50,000 deaths each year, left unchecked deaths would rise more than 10-fold by 2050.
One of the biggest concerns is the rise of HAI’s (hospital acquired infections) such as Methicillin- Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). It has been shown that bacteria such as MRSA can survive up to 38 weeks or even longer on contaminated surfaces.
Addmaster (UK) Ltd. has been working with manufacturers to develop a range of products treated with Biomaster antimicrobial technology for the healthcare sector. Biomaster is a safe, effective and permanent solution for reducing the risk of cross infection and is proven effective against most common strains of bacteria including MRSA and E.coli.
The antimicrobial action of Biomaster is silver ion technology. Silver is a natural antimicrobial that has been used for centuries to prevent the growth of bacteria. When bacteria come into contact with a Biomaster protected surface, silver ion technology prevents them from growing, producing energy and replicating, so they die.
Biomaster antimicrobial technology is already used extensively in hospitals, dental surgeries, care homes and GP practices around the world, built into products ranging from beds, cubicle curtains, nurse call systems, wall and ceiling paints, floors and door handles to pull cords and case note holders. There are currently over 50 different Biomaster treated products currently being used in NHS hospitals throughout the UK.
Addmaster Marketing Manager Karl Shaw explains: “Biomaster antimicrobial technology provides round-the-clock protection in hygiene critical environments against bacterial build up from harmful species such MRSA, E.coli and Legionella. Antimicrobial technology alone won’t stop the spread of antibiotic-resistant diseases, but can certainly be a hugely important ally in the fight.”
