Drug resistant infections will kill 10million a year

A review set up by Prime Minister David Cameron reports that drug-resistant infections will kill an extra 10 million people a year by 2050 – more than currently die from cancer. They are currently responsible for around 700,000 deaths each year.

The reduction in population and the impact on ill-health would reduce world economic output by between 2% and 3.5%. Drug resistant E. coli, malaria and tuberculosis (TB) will have the biggest impact. In Europe and the United States where antimicrobial resistance causes at least 50,000 deaths each year, left unchecked deaths would rise more than 10-fold by 2050.

One of the biggest concerns is the rise of HAI’s (hospital acquired infections) such as Methicillin- Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). It has been shown that bacteria such as MRSA can survive up to 38 weeks or even longer on contaminated surfaces.
