Polygiene BioMaster and World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW)

World Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) Awareness Week is a global annual campaign that aims to raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the dangers it poses. At the same time, it hopes to educate people on best practices to reduce the development and spread of drug-resistant infections. This year, WAAW will run from the 18th to the 24th of November.

Organized by four remarkably influential institutions – the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) – each campaign centers on a different theme. In 2023, that theme will be “Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together”.

What is antimicrobial resistance?

AMR occurs when microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. In other words, they become resistant to the drugs and chemicals we historically used to treat them. It can have a catastrophic effect, as previously treatable infections become difficult or impossible to eradicate, increasing the likelihood of transmission and the danger of severe illness or death.

What is Polygiene BioMaster?

Polygiene BioMaster is an additive that can be integrated into most substrates – polymers, powder coatings, paints, lacquers, textiles, paper and others – to provide durable 24/7 built in antimicrobial protection. Using silver-ion technology and a multi-modal approach, it prevents the spread of potentially harmful microbes and, when used in conjunction with regular cleaning routines, minimizes bacterial growth. Essentially, it helps reduce microbial loads between cleans, reducing the chance of contamination and infection.

What is a multi-modal approach?

When we talk about a multi-modal approach, we mean that Polygiene BioMaster works to eliminate harmful microorganisms in three different ways.

  1. It binds to the cell wall and disrupts growth.
  2. It interferes with enzyme production, stopping the cell from producing energy.
  3. It interrupts the cell’s DNA, preventing replication.

The multi-modal approach means Polygiene BioMaster operates on several levels and attacks microorganisms in various ways, maximizing efficacy. Unlike other technologies which may only have one mode of action, the multi modal action of Polygiene Biomaster means the opportunity for microbes to develop resistance is greatly reduced.

How effective is Polygiene BioMaster?

In our carefully controlled scientific studies, Polygiene BioMaster proved itself a fast-acting, effective and durable antimicrobial agent. It was found to reduce 80% of all bacteria on a surface after 15 minutes. After two hours, it was 99.99% effective. All treated products undergo strict ISO testing to show efficacy results, ensuring a reliable, durable, cost effective solution.

Where does Polygiene BioMaster fit into WAAW?

One of the main ways we can tackle AMR is by reducing our reliance on antimicrobial drugs as treatment. It will mean utilizing other technologies to minimize transmission, contamination, and illness.  We believe Polygiene Biomaster can play a critical role in complimenting effective cleaning measures to reduce microbial loads on everyday surfaces.

We know there is no silver bullet when it comes to solving the problem of AMR. But leveraging Polygiene BioMaster as effective, 24/7 always-active antimicrobial surface protection is an excellent way to mitigate contamination risks in hygiene-critical environments.
