Polygiene in Packaging & Paper

Benefits

Protecting the world’s resources

Packaging is one of the #1 issues for waste management. Every year, millions of tons of packaging are sent to landfill or for recycling. While the sustainability of packaging and paper is paramount in consumers’ minds, so is safety. They don’t just want their packaging to be recyclable and sustainable; they also want it to prevent the spread of bacteria.

Our advanced antimicrobial additives can be effectively used in almost all types of packaging and paper, from outer cartons and grocery shopping bags to clingfilm and foil. Because the protection is built-in, it keeps working for the product’s lifetime – that means it can be reused more easily and still be hygienic.

The technology

Protection built-in from manufacture to consumer

Our antimicrobial treatment, Polygiene BioMaster, uses silver technology to prevent the growth of microbes, protecting anything from in-flight magazines and menus to food containers and any other hygiene-critical packaging. Usually applied as an additive but also available as a coating, it lasts for the lifetime of the product, which means that packaging and paper can have multiple uses and still remain hygienic (alongside appropriate cleaning measures.)

But it’s not all about protection against contaminants – our patented anti-counterfeit technology, Polygiene VeriMaster, acts like a hidden trademark that guarantees the authenticity of your product. Polygiene ScentMaster adds fragrance to packaging and paper for enhanced freshness and odor-masking for areas such as garbage bags and nappy sacks – talk to us and find out what aromas you could add to enhance your products.

We’ve ensured that our top-selling product, Polygiene BioMaster™, has been rigorously tested by independent laboratories to ensure it does exactly what it says. And those laboratories have agreed that Polygiene BioMaster delivers outstanding protection against the growth of bacteria. Polygiene BioMaster conforms to ISO standards, as well as gaining REACH compliance, the EU’s exceptionally high chemical legislation, and standards indicator. Polygiene BioMaster has been shown to inhibit the growth of a wide range of bacteria, including MRSA, VRE, Acinetobacter baumannii, and E.coli.

Because Polygiene technology is available as a masterbatch, powder, or liquid, it can be added to almost any product during manufacture. It is suitable for nearly all polymers as it doesn’t break down during the high temperatures used to form polymer packaging. It can also be added to any paper, card, and other packaging products, including meat packaging trays, sealed bags, freezer, chilled bags, and even reusable grocery bags. As it’s bound into the material, there is no leaching. Polygiene BioMaster remains active for the lifetime of the product. Our products have been tried and tested by some of the leading supermarkets. Currently, Asda, one of the UK’s largest supermarkets, uses Polygiene BioMaster in its outer cartons, clingfilm wrapping foil, and baking parchment. This reassures customers that bacteria is inhibited from multiplying on the packaging and prevents cross-contamination, even when it’s thrown in the bin. And fewer bacteria means less odor, too.

Absolutely. One of the biggest driving forces behind Polygiene technology is sustainability and recyclability. That means the inclusion of Polygiene BioMaster should have no detrimental effect on the recyclability of any product. But it’s also worth considering that with Polygiene technologies inside your products, they can be reused more easily and more hygienically by consumers.

We need to advise printing clients that there is a patent relating to a very specific way of printing antibacterial material. As it only relates to a specific process and only applies to a few countries, it may not affect you, but we would advise that you seek your own legal advice to assure you are not infringing before printing your material. Further details of the patent and numbers can be obtained from your Polygiene Business Development Manager.

“This innovation addresses demand for cleaner surfaces. PaperGard allows paper products exposed to high touch volumes to stay clean without affecting the appearance or performance of the paper itself. The silver ions present within the paper continually work to prevent the growth of the micro-organisms, effectively reducing contamination levels on the surface.”
