Exploring the Science of Polygiene Biomaster™

THE TECHNOLOGY

Polygiene BioMaster

An advanced antimicrobial solution for plastics, textiles, papers, paints, and coatings.

Effective hygiene management starts by equipping products with built-in protection. Polygiene BioMaster™ is the first line of defense.

Based on innovative silver ion technology, our solution is integrated into materials during manufacturing and works to eliminate potentially harmful microorganisms from treated surfaces. Combating the growth of bacteria, fungi, mold, and other microorganisms prevents cross-contamination and facilitates cleaner and safer products, processes, and environments.

The science

Sustainability built-in

Because it lasts for the life of the product with no need for reapplication, that means there’s less need to replace frequently. Even items that are notorious as single use like paper and packaging can attain a longer working life because, in conjunction with suitable cleaning, they remain hygienic for their lifespan. By integrating BioMaster, many leading brands have already made a choice to move from fast consumables to durables.

Polygiene BioMaster can be added to a vast range of products, delivering effective bacterial and microbial protection even in the toughest environments – from toilets and bathrooms to food processing plants and hospitals. Polygiene BioMaster isn’t a one-stop solution, and it is not an antiviral. But it is a powerful antimicrobial tool that works best in tandem with your existing cleaning regimen.

You don’t. Adding Polygiene Biomaster to a product disperses throughout the whole item and becomes an integral part of its structure. The use of silver ions ensures it doesn’t leach and remains bonded to the material, providing continuous antibacterial protection for the product’s entire lifespan.

You can add Polygiene BioMaster at any stage during manufacture. It is available in masterbatch, liquid, and powder, so BioMaster works with almost any material. This includes most plastics, polymers, paper, board, paints, coatings, surfaces, textiles, and flexible films.

The science behind the solution

Polygiene BioMaster operates on a molecular level, making it highly effective at very low concentrations. Our silver-based additives fight microbes on three fronts:

  1. They bind with the cell wall and impede growth.
  2. They inhibit enzyme production, hampering the cell’s ability to produce energy.
  3. They disrupt cells’ DNA, preventing cellular replication.

This three-pronged attack stops microbes in their tracks and drastically reduces microbial load on treated surfaces.

Rigorously tested and independently verified

Polygiene BioMaster is skin-safe and food-safe. It is stable and non-leaching, making it suitable for healthcare, food, and liquid products. It also contains no nanotechnology.

Polygiene BioMaster has been independently tested to ISO 22196 and is registered with Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) in the UK and Europe. It is registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US and approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

No. BioMaster is anti-bacterial and anti-microbial. It is NOT anti-viral, although it has been tested against two common viruses – SARS-CoV-2 (causing Covid-19) and Norovirus. Results are unconfirmed. Polygiene BioMaster is effective against antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as Methicillin resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE).

Plastics – Suitable for almost all plastics and polymers providing effective protection against bacteria, biofilm, mold, and fungi. It is suitable for almost all standard thermoplastics, engineering plastics and high-performance plastics including Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP) and Polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Grades are also available for Polystyrene (PS), Polyethylene (PE), Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), Polyurethane (PU) and Silicones.

Paper – Polygiene BioMaster can be added to uncoated paper or board, making it particularly useful in the food industry. It can also be added to treated paper by using a size press technique.

Paints and coatings – Polygiene BioMaster is easily added to any water, solvent or oil-based paints or coatings, rendering surfaces resistant to bacteria. It can also be added to powder coating for high-traffic areas using thermoplastic-based powder coatings. It will not affect the finish, pigmentation or end colour of the product and will not leach.

Textiles – Polygiene BioMaster can be incorporated into textiles without affecting the characteristics of the material. It can be used in any fibre manufacturing process including PA (Nylon), PE (Polypropylene) PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) and PP (Polypropylene) melt blend textiles.

Flexible films – Polygiene BioMaster integrates easily into flexible film, making it especially practical for the food industry. It inhibits the development of bacteria such as E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella and Campylobacter.

Surfaces – Because it is integrated into the surface, the effectiveness of Polygiene BioMaster is not dissipated over time. It continues to provide 24/7 protection against the proliferation of bacteria. It is particularly effective in the prevention of Listeria microbes which are commonly found in food preparation areas.

A proven antimicrobial solution

BioMaster has undergone rigorous testing and is proven to stop common microbes in their tracks. BioMaster is NOT an antiviral. However, it has undergone testing for SARS‑CoV‑2 and Norovirus, and some indicate it is effective at stopping the growth of both.

It’s highly effective at stopping bacterial growth, but it’s not a replacement for regular, effective cleaning – it is most effective when used in conjunction with other hygiene routines. BioMaster is registered with BPR in the UK and Europe and the EPA in the US.

See our note on testing below.

How does it work?

The primary constituent of Polygiene BioMaster is a specially formulated silver additive. Silver is acknowledged as an effective antibacterial and was used as an antibiotic until the discovery of penicillin. In more modern times, NASA used silver to purify water on board the space shuttle. It’s also used as a treatment in topical gels to treat burns and in wound dressings.

Because Polygiene BioMaster works at a molecular level, very low concentrations of non-organic silver ions are required to deliver an effective antimicrobial barrier on surfaces and other materials.
